A fundamentally new invention or resale of an existing product?

Specialists from the Don State Technical University (DSTU) are developing a Russian equivalent of the PlayStation game console, which will be called PlaySpace, as the creators of the project told Izvestia.

The project is at the stage when the first sample of the device has already been created. The prototype is a compact personal computer equipped with a specialized operating system designed to run games.

The development team revealed that the new device runs on an Intel Atom X5 processor, with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The console also provides Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters that support 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, and the connection to the monitor or TV is via the HDMI interface.

The main innovation of the console is the ability to control without a physical gamepad. To do this, just connect your smartphone to the set-top box via Bluetooth. Control is carried out through a virtual joystick, which works through a special application for Android and iOS, which eliminates the need to use traditional controllers that are subject to wear and breakage.

The cost of the console is estimated at about 47 thousand rubles, but the developers have not yet specified when the device will go on sale. It is noteworthy that a computer with similar characteristics can be found at a price of about 8,000 rubles on Russian marketplaces.

It should be noted that experts from Tomsk Polytechnic University are developing a feedback steering wheel for car simulators, which promises a realistic gaming experience and is offered at a price significantly lower than that of foreign analogues.

In addition, a separate team of programmers from Sevastopol is developing the first Russian game engine for creating 2D games, which is becoming especially relevant against the background of international sanctions and restrictions. The project is aimed at meeting the needs of game developers and can find application in the commercial sector.

Experts note that, despite the existing lag behind the world leaders in the production of gaming equipment and software, Russian developments have the potential for successful development and can find their niche in the international market. The main condition for success is the creation of high-quality products that can compete for the attention of consumers, as well as the development of specialized educational programs to train qualified specialists in the field of gaming technologies.

The government under the leadership of Mikhail Mishustin was instructed to consider organizing the production of stationary and portable video game consoles and consoles in Russia by June 15, 2024. The Cabinet of Ministers also needs to work out the possibility of creating a domestic operating system and a cloud platform for delivering games and programs to users.
