Common fraud techniques

Phone scammers
Techniques:

  • They introduce themselves as bank employees and frighten you with the loss of funds.
  • They start talking about transferring money (paying fines, taxes, and services).
  • They force you to take out a loan.
  • Please provide your bank card details (its number, CVV / CVC code).
  • They ask you to dictate a one-time code from an SMS.
  • They ask you to install the app on your phone “to protect your funds”.
  • They ask you to urgently transfer money for the “rescue” of your loved ones.

What to do if your money was debited:
  1. Contact the bank and block the account.
  2. Request to cancel the transaction at the bank immediately: some payments can be refunded in time.
  3. Request the bank to perform a chargeback (challenge a payment that you do not agree with). The terms of the procedure depend on the policy of the bank and payment systems.
  4. Apply to the police with a statement and a request to open a criminal case.
  5. If the police refuse to initiate a case, you can challenge it in the prosecutor's office or in court.

Cyber Scammers
Techniques:

  • They create spoof websites disguised as official resources of companies (insurance, bank, government agency). They are used to collect all available data, including card and account details (phishing).
  • They distribute virus software that allows you to automatically redirect you to fake sites where data is stolen (farming).
  • They hack the accounts of your friends and relatives in social networks and instant messengers, and ask for a "loan" on their behalf.
  • They present themselves as non-existent charities and ask to help “sick children".

What to do if your money was debited:
  1. File a police report.
  2. If the money was debited without your knowledge, contact the bank immediately: block the account and try to challenge the transaction.
  3. Send a request to the Bank of Russia's Unfair Practices Department.

We took out a loan in your name
Signs

  • Call / write from unknown numbers and demand to pay off the debt.
  • They threaten you and your loved ones with violence if you don't repay the loan.

If you haven't issued any loans, then:
  1. Find out where the scammers got your passport data from. If you have lost your passport, immediately inform the police and get a certificate of loss of passport with the date.
  2. Order a certificate from the Credit History Bureau and find out if you really have any debt-this is free of charge 2 times a year. You can find out which BCS have your credit history on the State Services website.
  3. If you have loans that you did not take out, contact the lender with a request to liquidate the debt and contact the BCI for verification.
  4. Find out the details of the transaction: ask the lender for certified copies of the agreement and the borrower's identity card, employee details, and the address of the office where the agreement was drawn up. Collect as much data as possible and file a police report.
  5. Write a complaint to the Bank of Russia.
  6. If the problem cannot be resolved, contact the court and request an expert examination of the documents and signatures.

  • They draw up a purchase and sale agreement at an undervalued price, while overestimating the cost of penalties and fines.
