One of the biggest leaks in the video game industry involves the Rhysida ransomware.

The hacker group Rhysida published on the network more than 1.3 million files with information stolen from the Insomniac Games studio, owned by Sony. The intrusion into the company's systems occurred last week.

According to the attackers, they managed to get "exclusive, unique and impressive data." Files with a total volume of 1.67 TB contain financial documents, personal data of employees, including top managers, as well as development materials — screenshots, concept art, budget plans.

Among the compromised information there are secret materials of games in the Marvel universe: Spider-Man 3, Venom and X-Men. The contract between Insomniac and Marvel for the development of X-Men games until 2035 is $ 621 million.

Hackers put up the stolen data at a shadow auction, demanding 50 bitcoins (about $ 2 million) for them. However, Sony ignored the demands and, apparently, did not pay the ransom.

Insomniac Games was founded in 1994. Her portfolio also includes such popular franchises as Ratchet & Clank, Spyro the Dragon, and Resistance. Sony acquired the studio in 2019 for $ 229 million.

Sony Corporation itself and its divisions have been repeatedly subjected to hacker attacks. In June, Cl0p hackers stole her data by hacking the MOVEit Transfer service. And in 2011, Anonymous hacktivists carried out a large-scale DDoS attack on the PlayStation network, depriving 77 million players of access to their accounts.

Rhysida is a little-known group that has been active since May 2022. It attacks various companies around the world, including medical institutions, universities, and government agencies. The biggest attacks targeted the Chilean government, the Prospect Medical Holdings hospital chain in the United States, and educational institutions in Washington and Maryland.

According to analysts, Rhysida attacked more than 70 organizations using ransomware during the year.

Rhysida also operates under the ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) scheme, offering its services and tools to fellow criminals.

The attack on Insomniac Games has become one of the biggest incidents in the video game industry in recent times. Experts urge developers to strengthen cybersecurity measures to prevent leaks and financial losses.
