The investigation revealed how citizens lives have become dependent on AI algorithms.

The British authorities are actively implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated algorithms for making decisions in various areas from social payments to marriage registration, The Guardian reports. The newspaper's research showed that such technologies are used in at least eight departments of the British government and several police stations, especially in the areas of social security, immigration and criminal justice.

For example, an algorithm used by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) mistakenly led to the deprivation of dozens of people's social benefits. Cases of discrimination in the use of facial recognition technologies and detection of fictitious marriages were also identified.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has praised the potential of AI to transform public services, from saving teachers time on lesson planning to speeding up diagnostics in the healthcare industry. However, experts expressed concern about the possibility of a repeat of the scandal in the Netherlands, where the use of AI by tax authorities to detect fraud with child benefits led to a fine of €3.7 million and the illegal denial of benefits to really needy families.

Experts also expressed concerns about the cancellation of the independent data ethics council, which monitored the use of AI in the public sector. The representative of the Public Law Project noted the need to implement urgent measures to prevent the "opaque" use of automated systems, which can lead to serious consequences for citizens.

Next week, Sunak will gather heads of state at the International AI Security Summit in Bletchley Park, which is expected to set the groundwork for AI development on a global level in the coming years.

Despite the launch of the Cabinet of Ministers algorithm transparency reporting standard, only 6 organizations disclosed information about their projects in this area. The Guardian continues its research, sending requests for information to all state departments and police agencies in the UK to get a complete picture of the use of AI in public life.
