The billion-dollar fraud of state organizations ended with a real prison term.

Almost a year after our last publication about an enterprising American fraudster who sold counterfeit Cisco network devices on an astronomical scale, the story finally received a loud continuation.

Onur Aksoy, the head of a group of companies that manage several online stores, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for selling fake Cisco network equipment. The devices were sold to government, medical, educational, and military organizations around the world.

A 40-year-old Florida man was arrested on June 29, 2022 in Miami and charged with trafficking in counterfeit goods and fraud. Aksoy pleaded guilty only in June 2023, confirming that he managed the fraudulent operation through 19 companies and 25 online stores on the eBay and Amazon platforms under the general name "Pro Network Entities".

Aksoy imported tens of thousands of fake low-quality devices from Hong Kong and China, which were sold at 98% below Cisco's recommended retail price. The devices were provided with fake labels, labels, boxes, documentation and packaging with Cisco logos, which created the appearance of new, original and high-quality products.

However, the equipment was still fake, so it often failed, causing serious disruptions to customer networks, including hospitals, schools, government agencies, and even the US military.

From 2014 to 2022, US Customs authorities intercepted 180 shipments of fake Cisco devices sent to Pro Network Entities. To get rid of the attention of the authorities, Aksoy constantly used fake names for processing documents, as well as completely different addresses to which counterfeit goods were issued.

According to estimates by the US Department of Justice, the retail value of goods sold by Axoy for all time amounted to more than a billion dollars, and the net income of Pro Networks Entities exceeded $ 100 million.

During the investigation, it was established that Aksoy received seven letters from Cisco demanding to stop illegal activities, to which he responded by providing forged documents through his lawyer.

In July 2021, a search was conducted at the Aksoy warehouse, as a result of which 1,156 fake Cisco devices worth more than $7 million were seized.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Aksoy is required, in addition to serving a prison sentence, to pay Cisco compensation in the amount of $100 million and allow the destruction of all counterfeit products worth millions of dollars.

Onur Aksoy, the head of a group of companies that controlled many online stores, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for selling fake Cisco network equipment worth $ 100 million to government, medical, educational and military organizations around the world.

The 40-year-old Florida resident was arrested back in June 2022, and on the same day he was charged with trafficking in counterfeit products and committing mail and electronic fraud. In June 2023, he pleaded guilty to conducting a large-scale fraudulent operation through 19 companies and 25 online stores on eBay and Amazon, collectively known as Pro Network Entities.

According to court documents, Aksoy imported tens of thousands of modified low-quality network devices from Hong Kong and China that cost 98% less than real Cisco products.

All of these devices had " fake labels, stickers, boxes, documentation, and packaging from Cisco, all equipped with fake trademarks registered and owned by Cisco, which gave the false impression that the products were new, authentic, and high-quality devices manufactured and authorized by Cisco."

The fake products were sold as new and original Cisco products on Amazon and eBay to customers in the United States and other countries around the world. At the same time, law enforcement officers emphasize that many of them ended up in the networks of hospitals, schools, government agencies and even the military.

Devices sold by Pro Network Entities had performance, functionality, and security issues, as they were mostly old models that were modified to look like new and more expensive devices. All this often led to failures and malfunctions that caused significant damage to the work and networks of shoppers.

It is reported that in the period from 2014 to 2022, the US Customs and Border Protection Service intercepted 180 shipments of counterfeit Cisco devices that were intended for Pro Network Entities.

In response to these seizures, Aksoy began using false names and surnames for paperwork and provided a fictitious delivery address in Ohio to distance himself from Pro Network Entities and avoid attention from the authorities. Then its Chinese suppliers were instructed to send products in small parcels on different days to minimize the risks of inspections.

"In the period from 2014 to 2019, Cisco sent seven letters to Aksoy asking him to stop selling counterfeit products. Aksoy responded to at least two of these emails, forcing his lawyer to provide Cisco with forged documents, the US Department of Justice said in a statement. — In July 2021, as a result of a search at the Aksoy warehouse, about 1,156 counterfeit Cisco devices were seized, whose retail value exceeded $ 7 million."

As mentioned above, last week the court sentenced Aksoy to six years and six months in prison for organizing this scheme and making millions of profits. Also, in accordance with the plea agreement, he undertakes to pay Cisco compensation in the amount of $ 100 million and must allow the destruction of counterfeit products seized from his companies.
