Members of a geographically distributed group of fraudsters were arrested in India after they stole 28.9 thousand rupees (33.9 thousand rubles) from a local resident.

The publication India Today writes that five carders specialized in forgery of biometric data, which gave them access to the Aadhaar payment system.

The investigation began after a complaint filed by 46-year-old Tushar Kanti Mukherjee, who reported that his personal data was stolen and financial fraud was committed. It turned out that the scammers, for whom this was not the first such crime, posed as the real owners of bank accounts. In some cases, this allowed them to obtain Aadhaar card numbers and account details of unsuspecting victims. In the case of Mukherjee, they went even further by forging his fingerprints.

Investigators found that the fraudulent transactions were carried out remotely from two states (West Bengal and Bihar). Two leaders of the group were arrested there. Later, security forces detained three of their accomplices, who were staying in a hotel in Islampur. During the search, they seized ready-to-use cloned fingerprints that match the corresponding Aadhaar accounts, photocopies of cards and real plastic.
