SmartSocks are equipped with sensors that send data to artificial intelligence software.

Milbotix has developed unique SmartSocks that work on the basis of artificial intelligence. These medical socks can detect signs of anxiety in people with autism and dementia. The product is intended for use in nursing homes or in home settings where patients are often left without constant care.

Jacqui Arnold, Head of Customer service at Milbotix, noted that SmartSocks are probably the most appropriate type of" smart " clothing. They are more comfortable and less stigmatized than wristbands and other wearable devices.

In the near future, SmartSocks will be tested in nursing homes in Dorset, South-West England. The socks are equipped with sensors that interact with a mobile app, collecting physiological information from the user's ankle. This data is transmitted to the cloud platform for analysis using machine learning. When the AI-based software detects deviations, it sends an alert via the app, and the caregiver team can take the necessary action.

As part of the preliminary tests, the socks were tested in nursing homes run by Southern Healthcare. Patients expressed their satisfaction with the ease of use of the product.

One of the patients, Mr Piper, who suffers from dementia and has been living in The Old Rectory since November 2022, shared his experience: "Anything that is simple and easy to use and that helps us look at life better suits me."

It is planned that SmartSocks will go on sale in 2024 after funding under the program "Digitalization of social care".

According to the National Health Service (NHS), more than 944,000 people in the UK have dementia. This number continues to grow with increasing life expectancy.

The idea for creating SmartSocks came to the inventor when he was faced with the problem of his grandmother's dementia. Dr. Zeke Steer, CEO of Milbotix, stressed that the current product is the result of deep research and consultation. "SmartSocks have been very well received in healthcare settings so far, and I'm interested to see what effect our products can have in providing early warnings of anxiety and falls," Dr. Steer added.
