From hacking social networks to pig butchering: what did the educational program include?

Nigerian police have exposed an organized group of cyber scammers in Abuja, the capital of the country. On September 13, 2023, six suspects were detained. Representatives of the law also defeated the hacker hub, which was engaged in recruiting and training newcomers.

According to official data, the group was based in an elite area of the city of Dantata and specialized in various types of Internet scams: from identity theft and hacking of social media accounts to the use of the "pig butchering" method (deceiving victims on dating sites) and financial fraud with cryptocurrency. The detainees admitted their guilt.

During searches at the headquarters, operatives seized an arsenal of electronic devices that were used for criminal operations — computers, laptops, mobile phones, external drives. Experts have already begun to study them in detail to find clues.

Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, Olukaede Egbetokun, called on the public, relatives of detainees, friends and religious organizations to condemn the hackers ' activities and report any suspicious activity on the Internet to the authorities in the future.

On platform X (ex. Twitter) The Nigerian police asked the owners of apartments and other real estate objects to inform law enforcement agencies if it turns out that cybercriminals are operating in the territories under their control.

"We need to break down the wall of silence and expose the villains in our society," the police said in a statement.

According to the FBI, published in May last year, only complaints received between June 2016 and July 2019, the damage from fraudulent attacks such as BEC (business email compromise) amounted to 43 billion dollars.

According to the US Federal Trade Commission, 70,000 Americans were affected by romantic Internet scams in 2021, losing a total of $ 1.3 billion. And in 2022, fraudsters stole more than $ 2 billion through "pig butchering" schemes.
