Employees of the Department for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Telecommunications Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Vologda region stopped the activities of a group that specialized in cyber fraud.
"According to investigators, in 2022 and 2023, malefactors obtained unauthorized access to citizens' personal accounts on the Unified Portal of state and Municipal Services. Having obtained their personal data, they sent online applications for loans to microfinance organizations in different cities of Russia. After receiving approval, they withdrew funds via e-wallets and bank cards issued to third parties, and then divided them among themselves. About two hundred residents of various regions of Russia suffered from illegal actions, " said Irina Volk, an official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry.
During the searches, computers, laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards of various mobile operators, as well as cash were seized.
"The investigator of the SU of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Vologda opened criminal cases against the suspects on the grounds of crimes provided for in Articles 159 and 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The defendants were given a preventive measure in the form of recognizance not to leave and proper behavior. The preliminary investigation continues, " Iryna Volk added.
