How to clean your iPhone: Erase in iCloud, delete content, and reset settings to factory settings
Often, the reason why the iPhone and iPad start working much worse than usual is due to the lack of free space in the device's memory. If you notice that your device has become "pensive", often freezes, and automatically reboots without a command, then it's time for a "general cleaning". It's time to clear the device's memory of extra megabytes, or even GB of software garbage. Agree, it is not professional to use "handles" to delete each application and its files.
Today I will tell you how to quickly clear the device's memory completely or partially, as well as how to reset the iPhone settings to factory settings.

In the settings of iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad in the menu "General - > Statistics" there is a curious section - "Storage". This menu contains information about how much and how much the device's memory is occupied. You may be surprised that even the most seemingly innocuous applications, such as social media managers, can store gigabytes of useless data.
Most recently, we were contacted by an iPhone owner who was faced with a lack of memory problem. When updating iOS over Wi-Fi, this caused the device to fall into a recovery loop. Restoring the iPhone as a solution to the problem was not considered, because the user did not want to lose data from the device. Fortunately, everything ended well, the person still had to restore the iPhone via iTunes, and the information was restored from a backup copy in iCloud, the existence of which he did not even know.
This precedent encourages us to always keep the device's memory "clean", or at least periodically clean it from information"junk".

How to clear your iPhone
You can clean your iPhone radically, i.e. completely or partially, by deleting individual applications and their files. It is quite simple to do this in several ways at once.

Ways to clear your iPhone
  1. Restore your device in iTunes.
  2. Erase content and settings on your iPhone.
  3. Erase your iPhone in iCloud.
  4. Deleting an app from the desktop.
  5. Delete the app in the iPhone settings in the "Storage" menu.
  6. Deleting an app from your iPhone via iTunes.
The first 3 methods allow you to completely "reset" the device's memory, as a result of which, you will have an iPhone with a "clean" iOS at your disposal. After cleaning it, you will need to re-configure it and restore the necessary data from a backup in iTunes or iCloud.
The last 3 are classic and allow you to delete individual apps and all their data manually.
We have already written about restoring the iPhone in sufficient detail, so I don't see any point in repeating it. Let's try to erase the content and settings on your iPhone and see what this means.

How to erase content and settings on iPhone
This procedure is performed very simply, in just 5 "taps".
  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings - > General - > Reset.
  2. Select the item "Erase content and settings" and if you set the lock password, you must enter it.
  3. Confirm the request by double-tapping on "Erase iPhone". Do not be surprised that you need to confirm the deletion 2 times, the action is not reversible and may lead to the loss of important data, you must be sure of what you are doing.
  4. If the Find iPhone feature is enabled in iCloud settings on your iPhone, you must enter your Apple ID password. You can't delete content or reset settings without it (this is how activation blocking works).
  5. After you disable "Find iPhone", the iPhone screen will go blank, then the Apple logo and the process status bar will appear. Depending on the device model and the amount of space used in its memory, resetting can take from 2 to 15 minutes.
You don't need to connect the device to a power source to erase content and settings on your iPhone, but make sure that the battery level is at least 25%. Otherwise, if the battery is completely drained during the erasure process, you may need to restore your iPhone using iTunes.
!WarningIf you have an iPhone or iPad with a jailbreak (for example, Pangu), erasing content and resetting settings will put your device in "eternal apple mode", but instead of the Apple logo, the progress icon will appear on the screen. You'll need to restore your iPhone using iTunes.
With my iPhone 5s jailbroken with Pangu, this is exactly what happened. It is good that the backup copy in iTunes and iCloud remained. I had to restore the device from Recovery Mode, you can also restore it from DFU mode, there is no difference.

How to erase iPhone in iCloud
Another way to completely clean your iPhone "in one fell swoop", you can do this remotely from any computer, tablet or smartphone (the operating system does not matter). The only thing is that the device must be connected to the Internet.
  1. Go to the site http://icloud.com. log in with your Apple ID and launch the web app "Find iPhone". You can simply follow this link and log in.
  2. In the "All Devices" menu, find what you need (if there is more than one) and click on it.
  3. In the window that appears on the right, click on "Erase iPhone".
  4. Confirm the request by clicking on "Erase".
  5. Activation Lock will not allow you to erase data from your device until you enter the Apple ID password.
  6. You don't need to enter a phone number or text message, just click on "Next" and then on "Done".
  7. Immediately after you click on "Done", the procedure for erasing the iPhone will begin.
You can also delete an iPhone that is not (currently) connected to the Internet in iCloud. The request will be queued and executed as soon as the device is online.

Warning! Erasing the iPhone disables the Find iPhone feature and deactivates the activation lock. After completing the request, you will not be able to determine the device's location, enable lost mode, or perform repeated erasure. You can activate the device without entering your Apple ID and password.
On my iPhone 5s, the "Find iPhone" function was enabled and as a result, after erasing Activation Lock, it was blocked. To activate it, you had to enter your Apple ID and password. If you do not do this, you will still have a "brick" at your disposal.

Jailbreakers! If you erase an iPhone that is locked under a certain mobile operator (locked), after erasing it, you will need to activate it. This requires a SIM card of the "native" operator or an adapter for hardware unlocking (gevey or r-sim).If you unlocked your jailbroken iPhone programmatically using ultrasn0w before cleaning it, the phone will be permanently locked after erasing it.
Radical methods of cleaning the contents of the iPhone are over, now let's focus on more liberal ones, or rather on deleting applications and their files.

How to delete an app and all its files from your iPhone
As I mentioned earlier, there are several ways to delete an app from your iOS device's memory: from the desktop, via iTunes, or from settings.
There is nothing easier than deleting an installed application (programs or games) from your desktop. To do this, just hold your finger anywhere on the iPhone screen for at least 2 seconds.
At the top left of the icons (icons) of applications that can be deleted (downloaded from the App Store), a cross icon will appear, and the icons themselves will start to "dance".

Tap on the cross icon and confirm the deletion.

You can do the same from your iPhone's settings in the Storage menu.
  1. Go to Settings - > General - > Statistics - > Storage.
  2. Tap on the appropriate app. A window opens with information about its total size (including data).
  3. Tap on "Delete program" and confirm. When you're done, the app and all its files will be deleted.

The third and final method of deleting it via iTunes is to cancel its synchronization between the PC and the iOS device. I talked about this in the article " 3 ways to install apps from the App Store on iPhone or iPad".
  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable or Wi-Fi and launch iTunes.
  2. Select your device from the menu located next to the "iTunes Store" button (top right).
  3. Go to the "Programs" tab.
  4. Next to the app to be deleted in the list of downloaded programs, click on the "Delete" button. If the app is not installed in the device's memory, "Install" will be displayed instead of the "Delete"button. Then click Sync.

The app that you marked under "demolition" will be removed from your iPhone. You can install it again in the same way.
- Warning! Please note that the app (program or game) is deleted along with all content. If, for example, you created files in a specific program, Pages for example, and delete it, all files created in Pages will be permanently deleted. Save files created on your iPhone to cloud storage (iCloud, Dropbox, etc.).
In addition to apps, photos, videos, music, contacts, notes, and other important information eat up your free space on your iOS device. But there is another secret (for many) memory eater - Safari.
Apple's mobile web browser works just like any other browser: when you load a site, it loads its contents to temporary storage (cache). This is done in order to speed up the loading of pages when they are accessed again.
When accessing cached web pages again, the cached data is not re-loaded from the servers, but extracted from the cache. On the one hand, this allows you to save on traffic and get fast loading of web pages, on the other hand, you have to put up with the fact that the cache "eats" memory.
So, if you are actively using your iPhone or iPad for "Internet surfing", be prepared for the fact that the Safari cache may take up quite a lot of memory space. This amount depends on how much data the server hosting the site has allowed to cache. The owner of the iPhone can not limit this size, it remains only to periodically clean.
The Council: Make it a habit to periodically clear the Safari cache, this will improve the health of your iPhone and iPad.

How to clear Safari cache on iPhone
  1. Go to Settings - > Safari.
  2. To delete all temporary files, tap on "Delete cookies and data".
  3. If you want to delete cached data for an individual site, go to the menu "Add-ons - > Site Data".
  4. This menu shows information about all sites that use the Safari cache: the total amount of data they occupy and the size of data for each site. To delete data for one site, tap on "Edit" and then on the red icon in front of its name.
  5. Confirm the deletion by tapping on "Delete". All data for the selected site will be deleted and the next time you visit it, it will be downloaded from the server again, and not unloaded from the cache.
  6. You can also delete cached data from all sites here. To do this, tap on "Delete all data".

So, in fact, everything is simple. Now you know how to remove the "problematic" app from your iPhone or completely clear its memory.
