The Pentagon and the NSA are paying billions of dollars to tech giants for nothing?

Google made a major mistake that resulted in serious consequences for one of its customers. She accidentally deleted the private cloud account of the Australian pension fund UniSuper, which manages giant assets worth $ 125 billion.

Because of this incident, more than half a million members of the UniSuper foundation were unable to access their accounts for about a week. To restore its functionality, the company had to use a backup account from another cloud provider. Full access was returned only on May 2.

In a joint statement to The Guardian, Thomas Curian, CEO of Google Cloud, and Peter Chan, CEO of UniSuper, acknowledged: "This was an isolated, unprecedented case – this has never happened to any Google Cloud client on a global scale before. This wasn't supposed to happen. The corporation identified the reasons that led to the failure, and took measures to ensure that such situations do not happen again."

Although Google assured that the error occurred for the first time, the very possibility of failures and outages can not but cause concern for companies and government agencies, which are increasingly moving their operations to cloud platforms. After all, Google Cloud customers include about 60% of the list of thousands of the world's largest corporations and 90% of the most successful and promising startups in the field of generative artificial intelligence. Nearly half a million companies around the world use Google Cloud as a client platform, including giants such as Volkswagen and Royal Bank of Canada.

U.S. government agencies and the intelligence community are also turning to cloud services to store critical information. For example, the NSA made a $ 10 billion deal with Amazon to move intelligence to the cloud. The Pentagon also has a $ 9 billion contract with Microsoft, Google, Oracle and Amazon for cloud computing.
