What can be the reason for internet connection failures?

Recently, users of the Windows 10 and 11 operating systems have been experiencing serious problems with Wi-Fi. The root of the problem appears to be a security update released by Microsoft on December 12 under the number KB5033375. This update included a number of improvements originally introduced in the December 4 preview version KB5032288.

The problem is actively discussed on various Internet platforms, including social networks and Microsoft forums . Most of the failures occur on networks that use the 802.11 r fast roaming standard, and on devices with Qualcomm Wi-Fi adapters.

Microsoft has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, although it is reportedly aware of what is happening. A number of organizations have already recommended that victims remove the KB5033375 update as a temporary solution to the problem. One user noted that disabling 802.11 r allowed the connection to be restored.

In fact, none of these solutions is optimal. If you remove KB5033375, which includes many security enhancements, users will remain vulnerable to other threats. Disabling 802.11 r will cause inconvenience to those who move frequently, as this standard provides continuous connection to wireless networks.

Problems also occurred with other hardware, including MediaTek and Qualcomm. Experts believe that the reason rather lies in the Windows software, and not in the hardware.

Microsoft has experienced similar problems before. In 2021, the company released an urgent update when devices began to fail when trying to connect to Wi-Fi networks protected by the WPA3 standard. In 2022, another update disrupted Wi-Fi hotspots.

Brunel University in the U.K. last week warned students that their personal laptops running Windows 10 or 11 might also be affected, and recommended that they remove the update if they need access to Wi-Fi on campus. The university's devices were not affected by this problem.
