Jammers have long been the best friends of the Israeli army, but the enemy is not far behind.

The Israel Defense Forces admits that it uses GPS signal suppression technologies to secure its territories. This is mainly done to prevent rocket attacks by the pro-Lebanese radical group Hezbollah, which has a wide arsenal of jet and tactical weapons.

An even more important task for the Israeli military is electronic warfare in the war zone in the south of the country, in the Gaza Strip. The goal is the same-protection from drones, which Hamas actively uses in its attacks.

Some indirect signs suggest to experts that similar measures may be resorted to by Palestine.

However, the sensors did not detect jammers in the area adjacent to Gaz. This may indicate either that there is no active action on the part of Hamas, or that the suppression is very local.

The market for consumer GPS suppression devices is booming all over the world. For example, the $1,200 APJ-16 device is capable of blocking signals at 16 different frequencies in the range of 164-5900 MHz. Such devices may be of particular interest to Hamas, as they allow it to selectively block the right channels. The APJ-16 weighs about 1.8 kg, has a range of 30 meters, and can run on battery power for up to three hours.

Mechanisms like the APJ-16 can theoretically be used to confuse both air and ground drones that are used by Israeli forces.

Since most GPS satellites are located at a significant distance from earth (about 20,000 km), and the antennas of most devices are relatively small, the radio waves they receive are quite weak. Even inexpensive devices that cost as little as $ 8 can cause serious interference.

One of the Israeli manufacturers of drones claims that their drones and operating systems are protected from blocking. But the company does not provide any other details.

Information on how to create GPS jammers using commercial electronic components can be found even on the Internet. There is no doubt that groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as States hostile to Israel, including Iran, have studied it. It is possible that Iran provided Hamas and other terrorist groups with its own jamming devices or those that were purchased on the open market.

Low-power devices may not be visible to current monitoring methods, as they may not even have been activated yet, and the Israeli military has only recently begun active operations in Gaza.
