Broadcom, which absorbed the VMware business in November last year, changed the terms of distribution of VMware Workstation Pro, a proprietary workstation virtualization software package that is available for Linux and Windows. The VMware Workstation Pro hypervisor is now distributed free of charge when used for personal purposes (registration on the support website is required on the official download page.broadcom.com, but the package can be downloaded directly). When used in commercial projects as before, you need to purchase a license.

It is also reported about the free distribution for personal use of the product VMware Fusion Pro (hypervisor for macOS). Development and delivery of the VMware Workstation Player and Fusion Player packages is discontinued, as they are no longer needed after the start of free distribution of the more functional VMware Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro packages.
