Experts from the University of Chicago have invented a curious bracelet that uses ultrasound to muffle nearby microphones, including smart speakers and voice assistants.

The device features 24 speakers that emit imperceptible ultrasonic signals that microphones recognize as static noise. The signals are not audible to people and do not interfere with conversations, but the microphones record exactly them, as a result of which only high-frequency noise with interference is obtained on the recording.

As explained by the developers, the bracelet exploits the "synergy between ultrasonic interference and natural movement" of wearable device owners when making gestures or walking. It is capable of interfering in all directions and eliminating blind spots by increasing the interference area. Thus, the invention can provide protection even against hidden microphones.
