Employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Yakimanka district, together with colleagues from the Department of Internal Affairs of the Central Administrative District of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Moscow, detained two young people aged 19 and 20 at the airport of St. Petersburg, suspected of fraudulently stealing more than 30 million rubles from an elderly couple.

It was previously established that the attackers called a 73-year-old resident of the capital and introduced themselves as law enforcement officers. Under the pretext of an alleged investigation, the strangers asked the man to transfer his existing finances to so-called "secure accounts" using a mobile application that the citizen installed on his phone at their direction.

The misled pensioner transferred funds, including from his wife's accounts. In continuation of the criminal actions, the scammers informed him that he should also transfer to them the savings stored at home in foreign currency. Following the instructions, the citizen gave two couriers a bag with currency.

It turned out that the roles of messengers were performed by detainees. At the direction of their supervisors, they took money from an elderly Muscovite and handed it over to their accomplices, leaving themselves 300 thousand rubles each as a reward.

According to the police, the accomplices spent the criminal income on buying branded items and entertainment in the Northern Capital, where they were detained.

The investigator of the OMVD of Russia in the Yakimanka district opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. In relation to the defendants, a preventive measure was chosen in the form of remand in custody.

Currently, the police conduct operational search activities and investigative actions aimed at identifying and detaining accomplices in illegal activities, as well as additional episodes of crimes.
