It is planned to spend $ 1 billion on the implementation of the ambitious project.

Google announced plans to invest $ 1 billion to build two undersea cables that will create new digital routes between the United States and Japan. The new cables, dubbed "Proa" and "Taihei", will be built in collaboration with Japanese technology company NEC Corp.

The "Proa" cable will run through Japan, the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and Guam, while the "Taihei" cable will offer direct service between Japan and Hawaii.

At the same time, Google's "TPU" cable system connecting Taiwan, the Philippines and the United States (Taiwan-Philippines-US, TPU) is already in development and will also be extended to CNMI, which is expected to launch in May 2025. While the Tabua system, built by SubCom and expected to launch in 2026, will now also be extended to Hawaii, with an additional stop on the route from the US to Fiji and Australia.

It is also worth noting that "Proa" will be the first international submarine cable for CNMI, providing a new route between the continental United States and the city of Shima in Japan.

Google said the Taihei and Tabua systems will provide new routes between the continental United States and Takahagi in Japan. In addition, the company is building an auxiliary cable between Hawaii, CNMI and Guam to connect trans-Pacific routes, which will increase their reliability and reduce delays for users.

Details of the new submarine cables were announced shortly after a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden, where they promised to implement the concept of a "free and open Indo-Pacific region", if possible expanding their efforts to the whole world.

A White House statement after the meeting with Japan welcomes Google's $ 1 billion investment in digital connectivity as part of the North Pacific Connect initiative, an extension of the Pacific Connect initiative.

The United States and Japan also plan to work with other countries to build reliable network systems and provide additional funds, including $ 16 million for cable systems for the Federated States of Micronesia and Tuvalu.
