During 2021, contactless Visa cardholders in the UK made 94.3 million purchases using their cards, up from 25 million in 2020. This is reported by ComputerWeekly with reference to a study by Visa Europe.

According to the study, the growth in contactless payments has been noticeable not only in the UK, but in general throughout Europe. Visa contactless cards were used to make 340.1 million payments in Europe last year.

Poland (158.7 million purchases), the United Kingdom (94.3 million purchases), the Czech Republic (30.6 million), Slovakia (23.1 million) and Spain are among the five leading European markets in terms of the popularity of Visa contactless payments over the past 12 months. (17.5 million).

The number of terminals for receiving contactless payments also increased by almost 200%. This has been facilitated by the provision of access to contactless payments by both large merchants (M&S, Waitrose, Starbucks, Costa, Co-Op, Lidl, McDonalds and Boots) and independent retailers. The total number of terminals has reached 300,000.

In addition, Visa Europe reports that the number of Visa contactless cards in circulation increased 125% compared to December 2020. Currently, there are 32.1 million Visa contactless cards in circulation in the UK, 80.6 million in Europe, which is 158% more than in 2012.

The average purchase price made with contactless Visa cards was GBP 6.09 (approx. $ 10) in 2021 in the UK. The similar indicator in Europe was EUR 9.18 (approx. $ 13).

The study also reported that Londoners actively used contactless cards to travel on public transport, paying 10 million trips with their contactless cards.

We will remind, at the beginning of the year it was reported that contactless payments in Europe show a fourfold growth.
