Criminals have found an insidious way to eliminate competitors.

404 Media discovered an unusual method of using content moderation tools: scammers deliberately place CSAM images on Discord servers in order to block their competitors servers.

According to 404 Media, such actions differ from previous attacks on Discord in their clearly criminal orientation, which entails legal consequences both for those who upload such content and for those who download it, regardless of whether it happened accidentally or not.

This method is a continuation of the abuse of content moderation systems that were originally designed to protect users, but which can be used with malicious intentions.

The administrator of one of the servers said that his Discord server was repeatedly blocked recently. The administrator also added that the reason for the block was the placement and subsequent complaint about unacceptable content.

Some of the targets of the attacks are linked to "Comm" - an undefined subculture that includes SIM card manipulation, cryptocurrency theft, and physical violence. In addition to Discord, the group's activity is also shown in the Telegram messenger. Comm is a vast ecosystem that includes hundreds of gamers, hackers, and criminals. The FBI has already arrested some alleged members of the group for cybercrime and gun crimes. Some members are based in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Discord confirmed that it is aware of cases where CSAM images are uploaded to block specific servers, and also updated the Discord community rules regarding this issue.

"We are working tirelessly to ensure that such content does not appear on our platform, as it is extremely disgusting and is a violation of our community rules," said a Discord representative, noting that systems have been developed to combat the problem, including blocking violators and reporting them to NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Persons). children), which cooperates with local law enforcement agencies.
