Fight against cheats or encroachment on freedom – what is the real purpose of the Riot Games anti-cheat system?

Riot Games, the developer of the popular game League of Legends, introduced a new anti-cheat system Vanguard, which caused a mixed reaction among players. Vanguard is proprietary software that runs at the Windows kernel level. The goal is to detect and block cheaters, but the methods used in Vanguard have caused concern among many users.

Excluding Linux and macOS

The system is not supported on Linux and macOS. For the Linux community, this means not being able to play League of Legends, despite years of interaction with developers to maintain the game on the platform. At the same time, Riot Games does not implement Vanguard on macOS, as Apple does not allow the use of such programs.

Privacy concerns

Vanguard is described as one of the most invasive anti-cheat systems, being installed in the OS kernel and potentially tracking all user actions. Riot Games, owned by the Chinese corporation Tencent, installs its software on about 150 million computers worldwide, which raises concerns amid general concerns about data privacy and possible influence of China.

New horizons for using cheats

As technology evolves, cheaters find new ways to bypass security systems. For example, the MSI monitor, which uses AI to analyze what is happening on the screen and tells the player in advance where the enemies will come from. Everything happens exclusively on the monitor's hardware, and data is not sent to the computer, which allows you to bypass detection by security software.

This trend raises questions about future methods of dealing with cheaters, possibly using webcams to monitor players ' actions.

Personal experience and doubts

Personal experience of one of the players who tried to run League of Legends on Linux showed that after installing Vanguard, the game got stuck in an endless cycle of restarts. In addition, his wife, who also plays, expressed doubts about the feasibility of installing such an invasive update.

Such changes raise serious questions about the balance between effectively combating cheaters and protecting user privacy. The impact on the community and potential privacy implications continue to be the focus of public and game users attention.
