Developers of CCleaner, a popular optimization software, have confirmed that hackers stole personal data of paid users during the May cyber incident.

The relevant information is provided in an official letter from Gen Digital Corporation, which owns the CCleaner, Avast, NortonLifeLock and Avira brands.

According to representatives of Gen Digital, the attackers used an exploit for a vulnerability in the MOVEit software designed for file transfer. MOVEit can be found in thousands of organizations, including CCleaner, which used the product to move large sets of sensitive data across the Network.

The notification sent to users notes that cybercriminals were able to steal names, contact information and information about purchased products.

Gen Digital spokesperson Jess Monney confirmed that users phone numbers, emails, and billing addresses also fell into the hands of third parties. However, Monni noted that just under 2% of customers are affected.

It's not entirely clear why it took CCleaner developers several months to recognize the data leak.
